Single Mothers on the Road to Financial Stability and Independence
|
Many families face significant barriers to reach financial stability and independence. This is especially true for families headed by single mothers because they often work at low-paying jobs, are unable to be awarded and/or receive child support, have inadequate training and lack a college education. Overwhelmed with challenges and responsibility, they need support to succeed both in their careers and as mothers.
In Santa Clara County:
| • |
45% of single-mother households with children need public/private assistance to meet the basic needs
(e.g., food, shelter and child care) of their family. |
| • |
A single mother with two children must earn $34.36 per hour – or $71,468 annually – just to provide basic needs. |
| • |
In general, children raised by single mothers are 2-3 times more likely to be raised in poverty. |
United Way Silicon Valley’s initiative, Women Leading Change (WLC), was founded by a group of corporate and community leaders who are dedicated to increasing the financial stability of women and their children in Santa Clara County through leadership and philanthropy.
WLC empowers single mothers to increase self-sufficiency through financial education and a 2:1 matched savings program. Participants can receive up to $4,000 in matched savings that must be used to acquire assets such as a college education or advanced training, a small business, home ownership or retirement savings. The program is being conducted in partnership with Lenders for Community Development and the Housing Authority of the County of Santa Clara.
