United Way Silicon Valley is working with schools in the Alum Rock Elementary School District to ensure early learning success and strengthen families. National research shows that children who are proficient in reading in elementary school are much more likely to be successful later in life.

Too many children arrive at kindergarten unprepared for learning and without the skills they need to succeed. Kids who are behind when they enter kindergarten are often behind in 3rd grade. A child is 4 times less likely to graduate high school if they can’t read by the end of 3rd grade. That is why United Way works to ensure that more children are kindergarten ready when they start school and are reading proficient before they enter 4th grade.
