During National Volunteer Week, as a way to honor our most dedicated volunteers, United Way Silicon Valley selects a group of volunteers to be our "Stars of the Week." The following 15 volunteers go above and beyond the scope of volunteerism and we are honored to be able to highlight them this year.

Meet our Stars

Agnes Lewis, Community Volunteer       
Agnes truly believes in the mission of United Way Silicon Valley and
has quickly become one of our most dedicated volunteers. Throughout
the year, Agnes has supported many
of United Way Silicon Valley’s
one-day volunteer
events including Day of Action, the Holiday Giving
Program, and MLK Day of Service. Learn More.



Autumn Young, Board of Directors, Advocacy Committee Chair,
& Community Building & Impact Committee Member

Autumn is a dedicated volunteer who truly LIVES UNITED. As an active
member of the Board of Directors, Community Building & Impact Committee,
and the Advocacy & Public Policy Committee, Autumn is very engaged in
the work we do at United Way Silicon Valley.

Carol Garvey, "Yes We Can Read" Mentor
Carol has been a Reading Mentor since December 2010,
working with students at Dorsa Elementary School with the
“Yes We Can Read” initiative, in partnership with Grail Family
Services. Carol is very dedicated to the young students in our
community. In the classroom, her warmth and creative spirit
greatly contribute to a positive learning environment. Learn More.


Cheryl Fuelleman, Law United Cabinet Member
Cheryl kindly volunteers her time as a member of the Law Cabinet.
As a member, she continuously reaches out to various legal
organizations to encourage them to engage in United Way’s work
and the Bench & Bar. Learn More.

 
 

Dami Wusu, Credit Coach
United Way is lucky to have Dami as part of the Credit Coaching
team! Dami began volunteering with the Credit Coaching program in
November 2010, and since has become a vital member. As a
Credit Coach, Dami works one-on-one with participants, and over a
12 month period, helps them access and better understand their
credit reports and set and obtain financial goals. Learn more.

 
David Holbrook, Kohl's Volunteer
As a volunteer at the United Way Silicon Valley office, David has been
a passionate and dedicated volunteer from day one. David volunteered
in our office part-time helping with a variety of special projects in our
Resource Development department. In that role, he was a valued team
member. He brainstormed and came up with new fundraising ideas to
help further United Way’s mission. Learn More.
 

Fern Amaral, Audit Review Committee Member
Fern has been a volunteer on the Audit Review Committee for more
than 10 years. As a member of the Audit Committee, Fern reviews the
financial statements of United Way Silicon Valley's Partner Agencies
and provides expert analysis and recommendations for our grant

making process

Josie Barrios, Target Volunteer
Josie is a volunteer who truly LIVES UNITED. As a Target Team Leader,
she represents Target at every volunteer event in San Jose and her
selfless commitment to the community has contributed greatly to
Target's overall community citizenship.

Kim Vu, Breakthrough Silicon Valley Mentor
Kim is a member of the inaugural class of Mentors in a partnership
Tutor/Mentor program with Breakthrough Silicon Valley. The program
focuses on high school students facing challenges in San Jose and
provides support to set them on a path to college. Learn More.


 

Lewis Pollard, Earn It! Keep It! Save It! Volunteer
Lewis is genuinely interested in helping out his community. For years,
Lewis has been a Volunteer tax preparer and a Volunteer Income Tax
Assistance (VITA) Site Coordinator for the Earn It! Keep It! Save It! (EKS)

Lola Kashyap, "Yes We Can Read" Mentor & Community Volunteer
Lola truly believes in giving back to her community and is one of United
Way’s most active and dedicated volunteers. Lola has been a reading
mentor with the “Yes We Can Read” initiative, in partnership with Grail
Family Services, since the very beginning of the program in June 2010.

Michael Eckhardt, Leadership Circle Cabinet Chair
Michael is a loyal advocate, donor and supporter of United Way
Silicon Valley. Among many other activities, Michael has served
as the Chair of The Leadership Circle Cabinet for the past three

Shona Hemmady, Summer Intern
Shona is a true volunteer star! Her dedication and experience to
community service at such a young age is truly inspiring. As a Summer
Intern in the United Way Silicon Valley office, Shona helped with a variety
of different tasks throughout the organization. She was a true asset to the
team and brought so much creativity and positive energy every day.

Steve Preminger, 211 Advisory Committee Member
As a long-time member of the 211 Santa Clara County Advisory
Committee, Steve’s dedication and input is invaluable to United Way
Silicon Valley. Steve is strategic, personable and dedicated to advancing
the mission of the 211 program. Learn More.



Yashwanth Hemaray, Young Leaders United Chair 
Yashwanth sits on the United Way Silicon Valley Board of Directors
and serves as the Committee Chair of the Young Leaders United (YLU)
donor group.  Yashwanth leads a team of committed members who have
helped re-launch and energize YLU by providing opportunities for passionate,
young, successful professionals under the age of 40 to actively engage in
philanthropy, community and networking in Silicon Valley. Learn More.
