Thank you to everyone at IBM for their volunteer time and sponsorship support of the summer reading kit program.

With corporate support from IBM and many others, we will provide every child at selected elementary schools in East San Jose with a Summer Reading Kit, where many of the students are at-risk of falling behind. These kits include tools to help students maintain their academic skills over the summer. They include two age-appropriate books, selected by the teachers, and other resources to increase summer reading for the entire family

Thank you for joining us at our annual Community Breakfast.
Everyone at United Way Silicon Valley is very excited to implement the new strategic direction established by the Board of Directors – helping families with younger children become economically secure, physically and emotionally healthy, able to support their children's educational success, and more engaged and connected to their community

We hope you gained a greater sense of the importance of community and our connections to one another. We heard from our speakers why being part of a strong and healthy community is so important to a family's future, how volunteering with neighborhood youth can create a new found sense of connection for those kids, and how a small group of college students can inspire others to become advocates, resulting in new laws that help more families move closer to economic security. From each speaker, we heard how the actions of one person can change lives for many.

United Way Silicon Valley Brings Holiday Cheer to East San Jose Elementary Schools
United Way Silicon Valley is helping to bring some holiday cheer to elementary school children and their families in East San Jose by providing them with gifts and books. Presents are also being given to younger siblings who are not yet enrolled in school. Most of these children come from families who are struggling economically and may not otherwise be able to provide gifts for their children this year. “Poverty rates are higher in East San Jose than in neighboring communities,” said Carole Leigh Hutton, president and CEO of United Way Silicon Valley. “Many of these families have not recovered from the recent recession."

Western Digital and Volunteers Support
Early Childhood Literacy at Cassell Elementary School

Thank you Western Digital for your sponsorship of Summer Reading Kits to support early childhood literacy. Through the Summer Reading Kit program, every child at Cassell, Cesar Chavez, Dorsa and San Antonio Elementary Schools went home with a Summer Reading Kit this year. These kits included age-appropriate books and other resources to increase summer reading for the entire family. Research shows that the key to stemming summer reading loss is getting books into the hands of children during their summer break.

Special thanks to Bank of America, Bank of the West, Citi, City National, and IBM for their very generous financial contributions to support the work of our local EKS Coalition this year! br> Learn more about this program Earn It!
