Earn It! Keep It! Save It! Helping People Save on Tax Prep. & Access to EITC

The IRS, United Way, Catholic Charities and many community partners are working to connect low-income people to free tax preparation at volunteer-operated Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) sites. These free tax sites not only save people money on tax preparation, but also help them to access the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) and other critical tax credits that support working families to increase their incomes and create savings.

In the past five tax seasons, local county-wide efforts have grown from 22 sites serving approximately 2,900 taxpayers to more than 40 sites serving 6,096 customers, with $7.1m in refunds in 2012. Of the total refunds from this program, $2.6m was in EITC and $1.4m in Child Care Tax Credits going to hard-working, low-income families and individuals. This means precious dollars coming back into our community and in the hands of those who need it most
