Apple Executive to Lead Volunteer Board of Directors

Big Four Challenge raises over $1Million
PricewaterhouseCoopers won the coveted Big Four Challenge for its efforts to improve local lives by giving generously to United Way Silicon Valley. The four big accounting firms Deloitte, Ernst & Young, KPMG, and PricewaterhouseCoopers raised $1,099,816 for United Way's 2009 - 2010 annual giving campaign. Each year the firms challenge each other to see which can make the biggest impact on the community, raising more than $4.9 million for United Way Silicon Valley since the friendly competition began in 2004.  Read more...
 
Now Accepting Grant Requests from Eligible Non-Profit Agencies
For the first time in three years, United Way Silicon Valley has opened its Request for Proposals to support its Community Impact strategy designed to improve local community conditions. All strategic grants are awarded for a minimum of $50,000 per year for a three year period, with 95% of funding focused on programs that address United Way's top three priority goals: building adult living skills, developing children and youth, and supporting basic human needs.  Learn More..

$60,000 Awarded in
Financial Education Partnership Grants

United Way Silicon Valley recently awarded a total of $60,000 in Financial Education Partnership Grants to eight local non-profit organizations. The one-year grants, valued at $7,500, were given to the following organizations to support the development of San Jose's basic financial education infrastructure for the Bank on San Jose program:


> ACORN Institute
> Day Worker Center of Mountain View
> Catholic Charities of Santa Clara County
> Center for Employment Training
> Momentum for Mental Health
> Sacred Heart Community Service
> Sunday Friends
> Women's Initiative

 

 

 

Funding for the partnership grants was provided by the Silicon Valley Community Foundation as part of its strategy to support asset building programs in San Mateo and Santa Clara counties.

 

 

Bank on San Jose 


 

Bank on San Jose works to assist San Jose’s “unbanked” households open checking and personal savings accounts, build
a credit history, gain access to lower-cost sources of credit, and
invest for their future. 
This collaborative initiative brings the
unbanked population into the financial mainstream by opening
specially designed starter bank accounts while also stressing the
importance of and providing opportunities for financial education. 
United Way Silicon Valley serves as the fiscal and coordinating
agent for this initiative bringing together California’s Office of the
Governor, financial institutions, the City of San Jose, federal bank
regulatory agencies and community organizations. 



Starter Bank Accounts

Bank on San Jose provides an opportunity for an individual to gain
immediate access to a new account with any one of the
participating banks or credit unions as well as access to free
financial education.
 



Second Chance Accounts

For persons that have been placed into the ChexSystem, Bank on
San Jose provides an opportunity for an individual to gain
immediate access to a new account with any one of our
participating banks or credit unions.  If a person has been in the
ChexSystem for more than 1 year, he/she can go to any of the
participating financial institutions to access the new account right
away.  For those people recently placed in the ChexSystem less
than one year ago, they must pass the Bank on San Jose
Financial Education Quiz
.  Please see the links above for a listing
of our weekly Bank on Basics classes and the Bank on San Jose
Financial Education Quiz.  

For those persons not able to attend the weekly class, they may
access an
online financial education course. However, persons in the ChexSystem must complete in-person course AND bring Financial Education Certificate to a participating bank or credit union in order to be eligible for a Second Chance Account.
