Income and education are considered social determinants of health. They lead to resources that promote good health, the final building block for a good life. These resources include access to health care, nutritious food, and safe neighborhoods. At the same time, good physical and emotional health makes it much easier to get an education and hold down a job. United Way is focusing on public policies and programs that promote good health such as providing health coverage to low-income children through the Children’s Health Initiative, reducing the barriers to the CalFresh food stamp program, and improving access to dental care.
