Covering California’s Children

Access to comprehensive and affordable health insurance coverage is an important factor in determining the health of our children, their families and the broader community. Even with the important gains in expanding public health coverage to the state’s uninsured children, there are an estimated 800,000 uninsured children under the age of 19 in California.

Mission

To achieve a healthier California, United Way Silicon Valley has identified covering California’s uninsured children as a primary objective in creating and sustaining healthy, productive communities.

More than 25,000 local children do not have health coverage

Access to comprehensive and affordable health insurance coverage is an important precursor in determining the health of children, their families and the broader community.

Of California’s uninsured children and youth, approximately two-thirds qualify for existing federal and state health care programs, and one-third are ineligible due to their:

1. Immigration status (180,000 undocumented children)
2. Family’s income is too high to qualify for public programs (161,000 children with family incomes above the 250% of the federal poverty level)

Funding Support

The California Endowment, along with several other partners, funded 17 United Ways in six regions throughout the state to engage the business community in support of efforts to expand children’s health insurance in California.

Each region will provide a connection between the health care communities that United Way’s fund and support with the leadership of our business partners.
